Pulse Nightclub Memorial Cairn
2024
Sebastian Duncan Portuondo (b. Miami, FL, 1986)
Rocks, rubble, mirror glass
This work was created to commemorate the 8-year anniversary of the 2016 Pulse Nightclub Tragedy. While the victims of Pulse were from all walks of life, the majority were queer, latinx young adults who were dancing and celebrating at a nightclub during Queer Pride Month. In June 2024, over 150 community members at Franconia helped mosaic 49 stones, one for each life lost in the shooting. 250 additional stones represent those that did not die, but are forever marked by their presence in the club that night. Altogether, these stones form a cairn – an ancient sculptural form consisting of stacked stones, traditionally placed by pilgrims and travelers on their journey for way-finding and/or to mark graves. This is a place to remember those we have lost and invites you to reflect on the importance of queer celebration, queer safe spaces, and the community we create amongst one another.
