Artist Statement
As an interdisciplinary artist, my work spans sculpture, installation, performance, digital media, experimental curatorial practices, and social sculpture. Themes I explore in my work include: how we assign meaning to images, objects, and spaces (both physical and virtual); how material culture, visual media, and built environments serve as mediators in our interactions with others; and how, through our relationships with these elements, we begin to understand ourselves and the world around us.
Recently, I’ve been drawn to social media advertisements and the way we craft identity around the objects and imagery that are algorithmically assigned to us, most often with the motive of selling us something. This research is a critical examination of commodity, consumerism, and concepts of valuation, which I undertake through installations of readymades and catalogues of found images from product ads and e-commerce sites. My artistic outlook toggles between a child-like fascination with the material world and a critical reflection on the larger systems of oppression we function within.
