2018 Minnesota State Arts Board Cultural Community Partnership
Join us Friday, October 12th, 2018 from 4 to 7pm at Franconia in the City @ Casket, to celebrate the large-scale collaborative installation of over 60 youth artists. The exhibition is a collaborative installation, created by over 60, 6th through 8th grade students from more than 4 art classes at Northeast Minneapolis Middle School, with Lead Teaching Artist, Peter Morales.
Morales was born in Guatemala and grew up in Tikal, a Classic Maya city. He learned to walk under majestic Ceiba trees and eventually learned to climb the mountainous Maya temples of the ancient city uncovered from the rainforest. In middle school, Morales came to live in a much different environment; the Northern United States. He now has an undergraduate degree in biology, a graduate degree in Hispanic literature and linguistics, and many years of practicing as a visual artist. Before opening his own studio, he worked as an assistant to other sculptors for many years. His experience and understanding of art, history, and the important of storytelling are rooted in these experiences. Morales’ sculptural work often consists of zoomorphic forms suggestive pre-modern sculpture, Mickey Mouse, and science fiction robots. He aims to challenge, expand, and share his understanding of cultural identity.
Peter Morales, in partnership with Franconia Sculpture Park, is a fiscal year 2018 recipient of a Cultural Community Partnership grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature; and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
