Artist Statement
“When the shadow of depression looms over youthful optimism and endless possibilities who will cry for the innocence lost to time?”
The autobiographical nature of Marvin Touré’s work opens a window into the most intimate parts of his mind. Touré explores notions of inadequacy, paranoia, and how societal conditioning has affected his ability for self-love. Metaphors are used by the artist as a vehicle to probe his intense subject matter. He says about this piece; “Black is the quiet reflective space for truth to exist. The playhouse always symbolized a place where any and everything was possible, but what happens to those fantasies and daydreams as they confront the reality of my life? In my work, I often use seemingly benign imagery from my childhood to investigate emotion and humanity.”
