Artist Statement
A yellow sculptural contemporary Maypole with 12 “ribbons” of dye sublimation printed banner fabric combines typography and design elements referencing 20th-21st century propaganda and marketing elements, combined with Pagan color and pattern sequencing to conjur the elements and draw in cord magic and ritual. Counter(Clockwise) is the first iteration of Reinventing the Wheel, an interdisciplinary land art ritual project combining sculptural work and performance art as actionable gestures by artist Kristin Bauer. Reinventing the Wheel focuses on deconstructing white mythology and reckons with collective and familial relationship of White Silence and White Violence through ritual and interdisciplinary practices born out of linguistic and ideological research, bridging the personal and collective. Iteration dates are planned for the Solstices and Equinoxes in 2021-2022, and placed on land sites that follow the artist’s personal migration on stolen lands from place of birth (Minnesota) to present (Arizona).
