Artist Statement
The arching, overlapping tree trunks of Birch Infinity create a living form that can be both viewed from afar and experienced from within. The resulting work is an encounter and a place, rather than a static object. The archway invites viewers to reflect on the experience of passage from one state to another. The work asks whether a change in our environment changes us or whether we are responsible for our own transformations.
The project will develop over the course of several years, as the plants grow and assume their eventual, curved forms. Over time, the artist will return to the project site to maintain and form the trees, adding and removing additional elements as necessary. Once temporary anchors are removed, the trees will seem to naturally transform from freestanding forms at either end of the piece to the curved forms in the middle of the work.
