Artist Statement
I build sculptures for people to both climb and hide behind. They are a vantage point and a mask; simultaneously a way to hide and an attempt to have control over the world around us. I am interested in that confusion: how fear can be a weapon and control can become a mask. It echoes the scale of the disjuncture and collisions we live our daily lives negotiating. Through making sculptures that become tools for people to use, I can merge utility with metaphor and shift structures of communication. This can give us a way to think about what constitutes voice, ownership over spade and the points where we do and don’t come together as individuals and in communities.
