Over the course of the last year, “Movement Song” by Audre Lorde, has remained a source of inspiration and grounding. It addresses complex themes of letting go of something or someone in the midst of acknowledging that their memories will still remain. This work, inspired by the following text from the poem: “Through mornings of wish and ripen”, is the remnants of my own exercise in releasing sorrow, disappointment and expectation.
Constructed out of steel, the armature functions as the body. Grounded to earth, invested in balance and holding on to so many parts of the self.
The ceramic vessels that hang from this alter are the product of a 6 hour pit fire where objects, writings and regrets were burned along with the work; Leaving the residue of the memories I want to let go. And while the residue on the ceramic pieces is permanent, the ceramic form is not. As they fill with water and freeze over winter, they will eventually break. The final step in this process of letting go.
