Artist Statement
This is one of the series of works that I started in 1997, when I wanted to create a large vessel form that invites human interaction. Viewers can walk in and out of the sculpture with curiosity and the feeling of containment . They are also able to interact with the exterior and the interior. When one gets inside, one can experience the change of temperature, the scale of the surroundings , the view to the sky , and the weaving pattern generated by the wood blocks (1 , 180 blocks ). In this piece, I have meticulously placed each block in relative position with each other to create a curvilinear contour in combination of a twist of the negative division lines on the top and titled it “Orientation.”
