Artist Statement
I am an artist who mainly works with sculpture; I have spent much of my life creating art, in many forms, because I want to create artworks for others to enjoy. The longer I practiced, the more my passion for creating beauty for others to experience grew. East Carolina University, the institution from which I earned my B.F.A., fostered my passion and influenced my work in many ways—the concepts I chose to explore, the colors present in my work, even the choice to work in sculpture—all were influenced by my time at East Carolina. The inspiration for my work is wide ranging—including movement, geometric structure, and nature. My work overwhelmingly expresses movement, growth—or both simultaneously—two ideas that intertwine heavily. I feel that movement and growth directly affect change; as something moves or grows, it changes in any number of ways. My sculptures show a cohesiveness of geometric and organic forms. By applying abstraction, my works don’t always reference recognizable objects, although some are reminiscent of the organic forms, made of geometric structures, found in nature. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted; which leaves the viewer orphaned with a mix of conflicting feelings and thoughts. By manipulating the viewer to create confusion, I try to develop forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations.
