Artist Statement
My sculpture and participatory works are inspired by the domestic sphere, what I call the intimate ordinary. Often utilizing and subverting the scale and function of familiar household objects, I consider how objects can represent a person or community while remaining universal. Alone Together combines the vulnerability of the bathtub, a place of solitude, cleansing and reflection, with connection across a divide. Like neighboring houses, the solitary tub and the large community tub are joined by a sidewalk. In this moment of tremendous personal and political division about who belongs where and what bodies can or cannot do, I am curious: Can we come together from a place of vulnerability and contemplation? How do we relate to each other despite our individual differences? And are we really that far away from each other?
