Artist Statement
Underpinning all of Meadows’ sculptural work is a strong skill base (especially in wood), allowing him to deliver ideas in a forceful and compelling manner. In recent years he has experimented ceaselessly, exploring not only new media and techniques, but also new ideas. Thus he has been able to supplement these skills with the use of a range of additional materials, such as resins, soil, plaster, organic material (e.g. cabbages), photographic prints, and an assortment of found objects. All this experimentation was not, however, pursued as an end in itself. Meadows’ work is also characterized by an interest in narrative and other forms of conceptual content. For example, he is continuing to develop an earlier strand of work in which the initial starting point for each piece was provided by a suggestion elicited from a friend or acquaintance. An element of chance was thus introduced into the work as part of its conceptual agenda. But the one thematic concern that has remained constant throughout is an interest in the vicissitudes of nature and the natural world.
Anthony J. Meadows is an American born artist currently living and working in Amsterdam. His current practice draws on, and aims to pair, the natural and the unnatural. He is interested in the proceeding relationships developed/formed/forced between the two and the idea that what exists outside eventually comes inside.
