The Flash of Silver Breaths on the Wing on the Sky
Aluminum, steel, water
2021
2021 Visiting Artist
This piece is part of a body of work that invokes fire, cold, and the feeling of isolation that comes from fading winter light. Erdos combines glass blowing and sculpting techniques, using materials that are simultaneously fragile and powerful. Taking its name from Joy Harjo’s 1989 Secrets from the Center of the World, these works explore themes of geological time, industrial ruin, infinite space, and the horizon.
This piece was created during a live event at Franconia, during which spectators watched the artist pour 2000-degree liquid aluminum over a steel armature, backed by heavy metal music. These Cauldrons, which are also created in glass, evoke artificial mountains, alpine glacial lakes, frozen lava, and the calcified byproducts of industry.
