Visitors are invited to watch the pour; they may also make a cast sculpture from a sand mold into which they have carved their own design. There is a fee for the molds: $25 for a 6” mold, $40 for 8”, and $75 for 10”. Molds will be poured starting at about 2:00 pm, and those who make a mold can leave with their finished sculpture the same day. The hard work of this year’s 40 artists pays off when festival time rolls around, because it serves as the official opening reception for all the new sculptures created in 2011. Some sculptures are truly monumental in scale—think walk-through or walk-on. Some are smaller but intense—such as cast iron sculptures recently completed on-site. And some feature mixed-media performances at the sculpture sites. All the sculptures are meant to be touched and experienced “up close and personally,” so no matter what your artistic taste, there will be something at Franconia to intrigue you. Besides the opportunity to explore the sculptures, you can take an artist-led tour of the exhibit. “Beyond the Rhythm” belly dance artists and “Saturn’s Wings” artists on stilts will be performing throughout the day. You can create your own poured metal sculpture or have your face painted by Franconia artists. Kids and families will enjoy Magic Norm, magician and comedian. And if your pleasure is to just relax and kick back, Franconia has a spot for you. Artist Mary Jane Mansfield will present “Dream,” performance art featuring a dreamlike sequence full of lights, water, traditional Mongolian dance performed by Chimgee Halterhuu, a live marching band, and an improvised electronic soundtrack by Matt Cisler, “Datura 1.0.” The festival is also a great opportunity to showcase local organizations, and we are excited to announce that First Avenue, Perpich Center for Arts Education, PUBLIC ART ST. PAUL, ArtReach Alliance, Minnesota Citizens for the Arts and the St. Croix Festival Theatre will be among those participating in this year’s event. Food will be provided this year by Taco Taxi, Love n Grub Grill, I ♥ Coffee MN, the Taylors Falls Lions Club (deep-fried cheese curds), Grecco’s on the St. Croix, and Franconia’s own Lizard Lounge, our “You Betcha” brat shop. Come early, stay late! The Franconia Art and Artists Celebration is the perfect destination on a beautiful fall day in the St. Croix River Valley. Franconia Sculpture Park is accessible to all, with gravel and mowed grass paths throughout the park. A golf cart is available for those who need assistance. This activity is made possible, in part, by a grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council with funds provided by the Minnesota State Legislature, the St. Croix Valley Foundation through a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin, the Chisago Lakes Area Community Foundation, and all of our patrons. Thank you!
