OPPORTUNITY: 2013 Intern Artist Fellowship
Postmark Deadline: February 23, 2013
As part of our dedication to building expertise and experience in student, graduate and post-grad artists, Franconia invites dedicated, career-bound artists to apply for the Intern Artist Fellowship Program. Franconia works to nurture the artist growth, creativity and interaction between emerging and established artists in an outdoor, rural setting. The Intern Artist Fellowship Program provides the opportunity for students and recent graduates to experience firsthand the working life of career artists in a professional setting.
Intern Artists are provided room, board and studio space in the outdoor work area in exchange for daily assistance of the Fellowship Artists and Franconia staff. Typically, Intern Artists spend half their time on their own work to be included in the 2013 exhibition and half spent assisting Fellowship Artists with fabrication, site preparation and installation of all types and sizes of three-dimensional work; landscaping and park maintenance. Intern Artists are also involved in Franconia’s outreach and education programs introducing contemporary art and ideas to the community. The community and education programs that Intern Artists assist with include teaching students at our Kids Make Sculpture workshops and providing guided tours of the park.
The Intern Artist Fellowship Program is the brainchild of John Hock, founding Director and current Artistic Director/CEO, and it is based on experiences he had as a young artist. The program has been in existence since the first year of the park’s exhibitions in 1996. Hock received an award for Program Excellence from the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts for the creation of this Intern Artist Fellowship Program.
Intern Artists must fund their own travel expenses and materials needed to create their sculpture. To help offset travel and material expenses, some schools sponsor internships. The sponsorship makes it possible for a student in any financial situation to participate in Franconia’s Intern Artist Fellowship Program.
Click here to view the complete artist information handbook.
College, University, or Private Individual Sponsorship
Any career-bound artist or aspiring arts administrative professional may apply to Franconia’s internship programs. Successful applicants are provided with room, board and studio space (Intern Artist Fellowship Program only) for two to four months. Interns must fund their own travel and material expenses. To help offset travel and material costs that the intern may incur, some schools or private individuals sponsor their internship. The sponsorship is typically between $800 and $2,000, making it possible for a student in any financial situation to participate in our intern programs.
Please approach your Dean, Chair and/or Professor to discuss the possibility of school sponsorship. All potential interns need to apply to our program prior to their school’s finalization of sponsorship. Application instructions for the Intern Artist Program can be found here, and application instructions for the Public Art Administrative Internship can be found here. An applicant is accepted or rejected based on the merit of their application, the potential for an internship at Franconia to benefit their career and the recommendations of their references.
Receipt of sponsorship does not necessarily guarantee acceptance to our internship programs. Only after a potential intern makes a successful application do we accept sponsorship from their college, university or individual. We encourage all applicants to speak to their school representative early about the possibility of sponsorship.
Sponsorship is crucial for many students who cannot afford to spend time in our internship program without additional financial support. A portion of the sponsorship funds go to Franconia to help offset the cost of room, board, outdoor studio space, machinery and tools for the interns. Please view the suggested amount for intern sponsorship here.
