Artist Statement

The narratives that result from imaginative, figurative work inspire me. Using form and gesture to convey an emotion. Working intuitively allows for a sense of inventiveness and spontaneity. Drawing upon my interests in fantasy and science fiction fuel the imagery of my work, while my personal experiences fuel the context

Artist Statement

In this piece, as in much of my current work, I examine spatial habitats and everyday objects as physical evidence. I'm interested in a space's ability to suggest a narrative, that is frozen and unrealized. Lending to this idea, I invite the viewer to investigate this camoflaged habitat as a voyeur rather than a passive observer. I'm interested in that moment of actively discovering the unexpected, much like stumbling upon a crime scene. I see this as a tool by which to reexamine and recontextualize our everyday habitats, those that are as familiar to us as our own living room.

Seduction. The curiosities of nature and the synthetic environments that envelope nature, seduce me. In my youth, I shifted from an extremely rural environment in Northeast Minnesota, to various urban environments each year. Thus, Spitting Bazookas was initially influenced by nature, specifically the Spittle Bug, but through the creative process transitioned into a residual affection for that of the synthetic, contemporary world.

Artist Statement

This work represents the experience of working at Franconia Sculpture Park. At the park, the impressive wind makes plants, smiles and dreams seed everywhere. Whenever I recall my memory of working at the park, the three colors come to my mind: the purple of flowers, the white of seeds, and the blue of sky. I hope the memory will keep spinning with the windmill throughout sunrise and sunset at the park.

Artist Statement

My work investigates the interactive connection between the puppeteer, puppet, performer and audience. My interest in this interactive connection stems from my experience growing up in a household where one language was spoken, without speaking or understanding that language. My art seeks to bridge this gap through creating pieces that exist and interact without a predetermined language. I seek an environment where performers and the audience can interact outside of the predetermined scripts of society, creating their own language through an improvised interactive experience.

Artist Statement

A big part of my inspiration comes from the experience of being an immigrant. My art is shaped by a collision of memories of Soviet Russia and the new experiences in American culture. This combination leads to creation of images of hybrids and mutant adaptations that are representative of my transitory identity. Through my work I try to convey to process of integration and symbiotic coexistence of the past and the present.
